About Us

See below for about me

The business-Mason Dixon Wood Works is nestled in the foothills of the beautiful Catoctin Mountains, just south of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. I have been building real wood furniture and craft items as a hobby for 10 years . A small operation of myself and occasionally, assistance from my wife, allow me the attention to detail that seperates my pieces from store bought or imported crafts and furniture. I believe keeping a small operation gives a more personal touch and allows for a higher standard as well as keeping costs down.

I strive to pay attention to the details and only sell what I am proud to have my name associated with. I use solid, real wood and offer items ranging from my own designs to furniture reproduced from leading manufacturers and furniture stores to include bookcases, shelves, flower boxes and indoor and outdoor benches, Living room sets, bedroom sets and tables. The woods I use range from Pine, poplar, oak, cherry, maple, and curly maple, sometimes referred to as Tiger Maple.

I have a variety of patterns and designs, and since each item is handmade  every piece is unique. Locally I offer custom pieces where a customer will come to me and ask me to build something they have designed, or build an item they have seen elsewhere but want it in a different size or color or with different hardware options. I can also build it as it is described in the picture but at a fraction of the cost and handmade instead of made in a factory or with particle board or laminate pressboard pieces of wood covered in cheap plastic veneer.

Being in a historical area such as Gettysburg, I have a somewhat unique opportunity to be surrounded by old antique furniture ranging from the simple country look, or a shabbed chic look to the formal , richly detailed pieces that would have been in a wealthy persons home 100 years ago. So take a look at the items and please check back often as I do add items regularly. You can buy in confidence from me knowing that each piece I sell will be handmade specifically for you , with quality and pride. Please allow a minimum of 4 weeks for delivery as I do build the piece when you order it.

About me-I am 35 years old. Originally from Michigan (Dearborn Heights) I left there at 17 and Joined the Navy. I completed 5 years aboard the USS Wasp (LHD-1) followed by 4 years at a shore station in Washington DC. While stationed there I lived in Frederick county, Maryland. There I became active in the volunteer fire/rescue services.I obtained my state firefighter certificate and also EMT. I then went to Paramedic class after 2 years as an EMT. Finished that and left Maryland to go back home after leaving the Navy in 1997. Worked heavy equipment with a local union in Michigan, While still visiting my girlfriend that I had met in Paramedic class in Maryland on weekends. I was laid off and came back to Maryland where I picked up Heavy equipment work with the local out of Baltimore. We got married in 1998 and our first daughter came along in 2000. Laid off again I had already started college full time to get my degree in Computer sciences. I Started work for UUNet/ Worldcom's computer desktop support (IT) department in 2000, worked with that company through the layoffs and bankruptcy and corporate scandals. Fun fun. I then worked for Discovery Communications (The Discovery Channel) IT department for almost two years, during that time my second daughter was born. All the while I was itching to start a business, and since I was always building furniture anyway, it was the logical choice. Our daycare provider quit just before Christmas 2004 and since neither of us were willing to increase our daycare budget 200% it was decided I stay at home, start my business and also be the stay at home parent. So now I can add House Husband to my list of jobs. My 5 year old will come out to the shop at times and work on her own projects , most recently with her hammer and some small nails and some of my scrap wood she built an airplane. It is neat to see her creativity flourish in the shop. The youngest is now 2 years old and starting to try to come into the shop and if succesful, will grab my tape measure at a moments notice and do some measuring of anything she can. Its funny, they love to come out to the shop and "help" but I sure cannot for the life of me figure out how to get them to help clean the house.....any suggestions????

Well I hope this answers any questions you may have as to what type of person I am. I think I am a good person to do business with and will always strive to please my customers.I feel that honesty, hard work and sweat will open many doors. If its your door being opened by a customer, then they know your working to make them happy.
